Firearm & ammo price report: how much dealer prices actually vary
HighCapDeals compares the price of the same product across dozens of firearms dealers. That gives an unusual vantage point: for any given gun, optic, or box of ammo, we can see the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive seller at the same moment. We pulled the numbers across the whole catalog. The gaps are larger than most shoppers assume.
The headline numbers
- 97,783 products had two or more dealers with the item in stock at the same time (the set we can price-compare).
- On the average product, the cheapest and most expensive dealer differed by 36% — about $50.
- 80.7% of products varied by at least 10% between dealers.
- 48.4% varied by 25% or more.
In other words: on roughly half of everything we track, buying from the wrong dealer costs you a quarter more than buying the identical item from the cheapest one.

How we measured it
For every product with two or more dealers holding it in stock, we took the lowest and highest current price among active commission dealers and measured the gap. We used each dealer's effective price (sale price where one applied) and excluded items under $5, where small absolute differences distort the percentage. No estimates and no list prices — only real, in-stock offers.
The takeaway
Dealer pricing on identical firearms and gear is far less uniform than it looks. Comparing before you buy is not a marginal optimization; on most products it is the difference between the low and high price in a wide band. That is the entire reason HighCapDeals exists — we do the comparison for you and send you to the dealer with the best current price.
